Acebeam K40M Squire rechargeable LED flashlight. 3000 lumen 538 metre. My favourite all-purpose torch! Reviews here.

Okay, I'll just put it out there – this is one of my all-time favourite flashlights!

For starters, I'm a sucker for the MT-G2 emitter. Cree developed this LED for commercial illumination in areas where colour-recognition is critical, such as matching fabrics or paint – the beam is exactly the colour of sunshine!

It's also amazingly powerful, capable of delivering 3,000 lumens and throwing a fat beam over 530 ANSI metres (165 real-world metres) putting it squarely in the "big gun" class. At around 70cm it's as bright as sunshine!

Despite this impressive performance, the K40M is surprisingly compact. The body holds three 18650 batteries, so it's small and light enough to be carried effortlessly, yet it's big enough to dissipate the heat from the LED which means it can run at full blast for an hour without any noticeable loss of brightness!

And I just love the rotating collar which is used to select the brightness level. Combined with a mechanical tail-switch, I honestly believe this is the best user interface on the market. It's hard to overstate the value of being able to select a mode before turning the torch on, or to adjust the brightness up or down without having to rotate through all the other settings.

The K40M has six perfectly spaced brightness levels (and a strobe), including a one-lumen "moonlight mode" and a wonderful mid-level setting which delivers over 1,000 lumens for four and a half hours! The shape of the torch lends itself to tail-standing, so this outdoor tiger becomes the perfect indoor pussycat during a power-cut.

When you put it all together, the K40M reminds me of those TV cookery programmes where the judges describe an entry as "a complete dish" and "fault free". Sure, there are a few torches that shine further or deliver more lumens, but they are much heavier in the hand and on the wallet.

For me, the K40M is the ideal torch for home and farm security, neighbourhood watch patrols, wildlife photography and much more – it's like having your own sunbeam! Because it's the perfect light for the rural or urban landowner, and it feels and looks very refined, I've called it the "Squire", but I think the Afrikaans "Bielie" also fits very well.

The Squire is IPX8 waterproof, so it will shrug off a highveld thunderstorm or an accidental dunking in the farm dam, and it comes with a full-house of accessories including a holster and lanyard, spare o-rings and tail-switch cover, as well as a five-year warranty fully supported by yours truly.
