Sofirn SP31ii Hilt rechargeable LED flashlight. 1200 lumen 257 metre. Best bang for buck in a pocket torch! Reviews here.

Mae West is reputed to have said "Is that a gun in your pocket or are you happy to see me?" If you want to carry a powerful torch in your pocket (and who doesn't?) but you'd prefer that people don't quote Mae West at you, then we need to talk about "tube lights".

Tube lights take a full-sized 18650 battery but are still compact enough to carry in your jeans. The combination of a high-end LED and lithium-ion battery gives you a powerful, long-running and versatile light that punches well above its weight.

If you have only one torch, it should be a tube light!

The Sofirn SP31ii is the most refined entry to this category of flashlight that I've seen, both in terms of build-quality and features – a genuine benchmark against which others can be judged.

It's also extraordinary value for money!

Sofirn (pronounced "So-fern") have recently upgraded this torch by fitting Cree's latest XPL HI V3 emitter, which is optimised to give the longest possible beam from a compact, efficient torch. They've crafted a housing from aircraft-grade aluminium and provided a well-considered user interface and range of brightness modes.

The result is impressive – a light that whacks out more than 1,200 lumens, according to the manufacturers, and throws a broad beam over 250 ANSI metres (using the same formula as other torch manufacturers) or 80 real-world metres, according to my lux-meter!

I've called this torch the Hilt because it reminds me of the light sabres wielded by the Jedi Knights in Star Wars,.

Sofirn have ticked all the boxes with this light sabre. It has mode-memory, a battery-status indicator, reverse-polarity protection and advanced temperature regulation. It can tail-stand and features a "hidden" dual-frequency defensive strobe and SOS signal. The hardened-glass lens has an anti-reflective coating (with a purple reflection, nogal), it's IPX8 waterproof and impact resistant, supplied with a lanyard and spare o-rings, and covered by an 18-month warranty supported to the hilt by yours truly.

I'm also pushing the value proposition to the hilt by offering the SP31 with the best budget battery on the market, the KeepPower 2,600mAh Li-Ion, and the wonderful LiitoKala 100 USB charger/powerbank! And I can even give you a discount if you pay by EFT-on-invoice!!

If you can only take one flashlight with you, this should be it!

If you want to give the gift of light to someone, young or old, male or sensible, you can't do better.

If you like to keep reliable torches in your car, hall cupboard, bedside table and pocket, this is the one.

This is light engineering, taken to the Hilt!
